President Joe Biden, addressing the nation from the Oval Office on Wednesday evening, described his decision to step aside from the 2024 presidential race as a step to protect democracy and pass “the torch to a new generation.”
In a heartfelt speech marking the start of the final chapter of his presidency and his five decades in public service, Biden emphasized that uniting the party required putting aside personal ambition for a greater cause.
“I revere this office. But I love my country more,” he said. “It’s been the honor of my life to serve as your president. But in defense of democracy, which is at stake and more important than any title, I draw strength and joy in working for the American people.”
While Biden didn’t mention Donald Trump by name, he contrasted himself with the former president, emphasizing that in America, “kings and dictators do not rule. The people do. History is in your hands, the idea of America lies in your hands.”
Biden, who had been the presumptive Democratic nominee, said, “In recent weeks, it’s become clear to me that I need to unite my party in this critical endeavor. I believe my record as president, my leadership in the world, my vision for America’s future all merited a second term. But nothing can come in the way of saving our democracy. That includes personal ambition. So, I’ve decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation. It’s the best way to unite our nation.”
His speech, lasting about 11 minutes, was his first extensive remarks since announcing he wasn’t running and since recovering from Covid-19. Biden highlighted his first-term achievements and outlined goals for his remaining months in office, including Supreme Court reform, ending the war in Gaza, upholding American alliances, and advancing his cancer-ending initiative.
Biden also endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, saying, “She’s experienced, tough, capable, and has been an incredible partner and leader for our country. Now the choice is up to you, the American people.”
This Oval Office address, only the fourth of Biden’s presidency and the second in ten days, was prepared with help from historian Jon Meacham and senior aide Mike Donilon. Harris, having quickly secured the necessary delegates for the Democratic nomination, continued her campaign in key battleground states, contrasting herself with Trump and highlighting her readiness to lead.
