Americans' love for tequila keeps growing, and it doesn't need a special day to be celebrated—but there's one anyway: National Tequila Day, coming up this Wednesday.
Tequila has evolved far beyond the traditional shot with salt and lime.
In 2023, U.S. tequila suppliers saw $6.5 billion in revenue, an increase of nearly 8% from 2022, according to the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States. This year, tequila sales already account for over 14% of total spirits spending, trailing only whiskey (35%) and vodka (20%), as per Bump Williams Consulting.
Tequila’s rise in popularity is partly due to its reputation as a healthier choice, produced naturally and with high quality. Sue Hrib, founder and CEO of Biatch tequila, noted, "Tequila’s rich heritage and artisanal production contribute to its genuine authenticity. People are consuming more mindfully, appreciating both the craft and versatility of the spirit."
Ready-to-drink tequila cocktails are also hot sellers. Bump Williams remarked, "Tequila is still KILLING it at retail," based on data from U.S. supermarkets, drug stores, mass-merchandise stores, convenience stores, and liquor stores.
In celebration of National Tequila Day on July 24, some restaurants are offering special deals:
- **Buffalo’s Cafe**: Buy any tequila drink, including margaritas, and get a free order of chips and queso (dine-in only).
- **Chili’s**: Enjoy $5 Tequila Trifecta cocktails, made with el Jimador Silver, 1800 Reposado, and Jose Cuervo Gold. My Chili's Rewards members can also get a free order of chips and salsa.
