Billy Bean dies at 60

NEW YORK (AP) — Billy Bean, who became the second former Major League Baseball player to come out as gay in 1999 before becoming the sport’s senior vice president for diversity, equity and inclusion, has died. He was 60.

Billy Bean, former Major League Baseball player and MLB’s first Ambassador for Inclusion, has passed away at the age of 60.

Bean, a California native, had a notable six-season career in the big leagues from 1987 to 1995. He made a memorable debut with the Detroit Tigers, hitting four times in a single game, setting a record for newcomers. He also played for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres. As a standout outfielder at Loyola Marymount, he led his team to the NCAA Men’s College World Series in 1986 and earned two All-American titles.

In addition to his baseball career, Bean was a prominent advocate for LGBTQ+ inclusion. He came out as gay in 1999, becoming the second former major leaguer to do so. His memoir, “Going the Other Way,” and his role as a keynote speaker highlighted his advocacy.

Bean joined MLB in 2014 as the league’s first Ambassador for Inclusion under former Commissioner Bud Selig. Over more than a decade, he advanced efforts to promote equality and inclusivity across baseball. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred expressed profound sorrow, stating, “Our hearts are broken today as we mourn our dear friend and colleague, Billy Bean. He was one of the kindest and most respected individuals, and he made a significant impact through his dedication to others.”
